EVENT & TOUR: “RACING LEGENDS TOUR AT CROWN HILL”
We invite you to join us on Sunday, June 23 on for a very special “Racing Legends Tour at Crown Hill,” a fascinating guided tour to some of the gravesites of Crown Hill’s Racing Legends! The “Racing Legends Tour at Crown Hill” will follow a dedication ceremony at the “Final Finish Line” yard of bricks & “Racing Legacy” sign next to Section 13. The custom-made wayfinding signs were privately funded and will be installed at the four Speedway founders gravesites, Carl G. FisherJames A. AllisonFrank W. Wheeler, and Arthur Newbyas well as a number of others. Eventually, we hope to mark the gravesites of all 60 Crown Hill’s racing legends.
The ceremony will feature great speakers and vintage cars! Indy 500 Radio Network legend Howdy Bell will serve as master of ceremonies and remarks will be made by Crown Hill President David Rieck and Indiana Racing Memorial Association Co-founders Brian Hasler and Mark Eutsler. Other speakers will be announced. Come and hear the famous, Back Home Again in Indiana sung at the ceremony! Following the dedication, a guided walking tour to the marked graves will feature lots of interesting history.
Refreshments and some chairs will be available. Feel free to bring your own! To locate the event site, follow the WHITE LINE painted on the road from either cemetery gate and you will see the event site on the east side of Section 13, close to President Harrison’s memorial. (See a Crown Hill map HERE.) Free parking is plentiful and the event is FREE.
The custom racing legends wayfinding signs are a continuation of projects planned with IRMA (Indiana Racing Memorial Association). In 2017, Crown Hill Heritage Foundation partnered with IRMA to install the beautiful “Racing Legacy” sign on Section 13, down the hill from Speedway founder Carl G. Fisher’s private family mausoleum, and in 2018 they installed the “Final Finish Line,” a row of bricks a yard wide across the road and next to the sign (pictured). Be sure to join us in 2020 for our next phase!
