Ground Burial

Crown Hill Cemetery was founded in 1863. Up until that time, the principal burial site for area citizens was Greenlawn Cemetery, the old city cemetery, located on the southwest side of the city. By 1860 little space was available due to Indianapolis' growth and the large number of Civil War casualties. The need for more space was urgent.

Thirty prominent citizens organized the Crown Hill Association for the purpose of solving the problem in September, 1863. By December of that year, 246 acres had been purchased; the Cemetery was dedicated on June 1, 1864; and the first burial took place the next day.

Over the years property has been added, bringing the total to its current 555 acres. It is estimated that this should accommodate the needs of Indianapolis for at least the next 200 years.

Today burial spaces located in beautiful, scenic areas are available in:

All of our burial lots are maintained by a Permanent Care Fund that insures perpetual continued care without further expense to the lot owners. Each section in the Cemetery provides a tranquil setting for contemplation and personal renewal.
