The Deryk Hallal Scholarship
The Deryk Hallal Scholarship was established by Jeff and Pam Hallal and the Navy Club of Indianapolis, Ship 35. The scholarship was designed to honor the heroism of Marine PFC Deryk Hallal, killed in action on April 5, 2004 in Ramadi, Iraq, approximately 60 miles west of Baghdad. Deryk and his fellow squad members were ambushed while in route to assist another squad that was under attack. Deryk is one of only 12 Marines in the country with the rank of Private First Class to receive a Bronze Star medal for his heroism in Iraq.
The recipient of the scholarship will be selected annually by a committee made up of the leadership from the Navy Club, the parents of PFC Hallal, representatives of Crown Hill Cemetery and others selected to serve each year. The recipient will participate in the Indianapolis Veterans Day Parade, and will be awarded his/her scholarship at the Field of Valor on the grounds of Crown Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery.
Donations can be made to the scholarship fund through Union Federal in Indianapolis. Further inquiries can be made by contacting the Navy Club of Indianapolis, Ship 35.
