In 1985, the Crown Hill Heritage Foundation was formed to raise funds necessary for the restoration of Crown Hill's valuable historic structures. The Heritage Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity that serves to educate and inform the public by providing historical tours, events, and educational programs to increase public awareness and to promote the rich heritage of Crown Hill.
The history and heritage of our community is chronicled not only through the lives of the more than 185,000 citizens buried here, but also through the historic structures and buildings, many which date back over a century to the 1860's. After more than a century of deterioration, these historic buildings and structures require restoration. In 1985, this need was recognized with the incorporation of the Crown Hill Heritage Foundation. Over $1.7 million has been raised since 1985 to fuel restoration of Crown Hill's historic structures and to help develop educational programs for the community.
The foundation sponsors various programs including the guided tour program, monthly tour series, the Race Through Hoosier History, Tour Fest, Picnic With Riley at Sunset, and most recently the foundation produced an Educator's Handbook. Funds raised through the many programs the foundation sponsors help to ensure the legacy of Crown Hill will continue for generations to come.
Generous contributions of various foundations, corporations and individuals have provided funding to rebuild the masonry and wrought iron fence which surrounds the south grounds of the cemetery and to restore the three-arch entryway and gatehouse at the 34th Street entrance. Contributions have also funded the repair and restoration of the 38th Street underpass and the Community Mausoleum. With funds from the foundation, restoration was made to the interior of the Waiting Station, located just inside the 34th Street Gate entrance. Restoration of the exterior is now underway. The foundation is seeking funding for our most exciting project…the restoration of the Gothic Chapel. Today, the Gothic Chapel is used for funeral services, weddings, receptions, lectures, tour groups and is available to the general public.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, Crown Hill provides the community with a legacy of tangible history, architectural accomplishment and natural beauty. If you would like to make a tax-deductible contribution to the foundation you may do so by mailing in your contribution to the Crown Hill Heritage Foundation at 700 West 38th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46208, or by calling (317) 920-4165.
