Virginia Ruth (Nevitt) Dowty, 89, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, August 4, 2010, at Regency Place of Greenwood. She was born March 30, 1921, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to the late Raymond and Lulu (Spooner) Nevitt. She married Adam Isaiah Dowty on August 4, 1940. He preceded her in death on October 7, 1995. She graduated from Shortridge High School in 1939. After their marriage, she and her husband resided in Indianapolis until he shipped overseas. When he returned from the service, they continued to reside in Indianapolis until 1956 when they moved their family to Carmel, where they lived until 1994. She was an active member of the Carmel High School Band Boosters while her sons were in high school. She worked for the Indiana Central Regional Blood Center for many years before retiring in April of 1987. She has resided the last several years at GreenTree at Post Road Assisted Living. She is survived by her sons Gary Dowty (Sandra) and Steven Dowty (Janet), her granddaughter Heather Dowty, her grandson Derek Dowty, and her nephew Robert Lang. Visitation will be Sunday, August 8, 2010, at the Crown Hill Gothic Chapel, 700 West 38th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46208 (317-925-3800) from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
