Mrs. Mildred Helen Nunamaker
December 17, 1917 - November 19, 2009
Mildred Helen McFarling was born in Marshall, Illinois, to Ora Dell Partlow McFarling and Leonard Irson McFarling, the 9th of twelve children. When she was a toddler, the family moved to a farm near Hazel Dell, Illinois. She and her siblings attended a one room school through the 8th grade. She graduated from Casey High School in Casey, Illinois, at the age of 16, and then moved to Decatur, Illinois where she began working at Merchants and Manufacturers Association. Her sister, Nelle, introduced her to her future husband, John William Nunamaker, Jr., after he asked Nelle and her husband, Charlie, if there were any more sisters at home like Nelle. They married on August 7, 1936, and, within a short time, moved to his home town, Indianapolis. She and her husband raised three children to adulthood, John (Bill) William III , Carole, and Susan.
After staying home when the children were young, she worked in her brother’s business, McFarling Foods, until her retirement in 1982. She and her husband enjoyed 43 years of marriage until his death in 1979. She continued living in Indianapolis until June, 2008, when her frailty led to her move to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to be close to one of her daughters, Susan.
She was devoted to her family-her husband, his family, her children, and her brothers and sisters and their families, as they were to her.
She loved music and an adolescent dream was to be a singer. She loved reading, gardening, crossword puzzles, time spent in Florida, and in later years, became a sports fan of the Pacers and the Colts. To all of us she was an extraordinary example of perseverance and was steadfast in her love and encouragement of her children.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, sons, Mark Broady, and John (Bill)William III., sisters Nelle Barkley, Lenna Glidewell, Mary Purcell, Martha McFarling, Rocena Hayworth, and brothers, William McFarling, John McFarling, James McFarling, and Marion McFarling. She is survived by her daughters, Carole Nunamaker Tinklepaugh and husband John of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Susan Nunamaker Carr and husband Terry of Oklahoma City, brothers Donald McFarling and Robert McFarling, grandchildren Alice deCallatay Kwong, John Carr, Sydney Carr, Nelle Castanias, Laura Brosseau, Sarah Moorehouse, and great grandchildren Amelia May Kwong, Amber Short, Cleo Castanias, Jack Castanias, and Zack Nunamaker. Being from a family of 12 children, she also has numerous cherished nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews as well as beloved nieces from the Nunamaker side, Jean Stacy Bradford and Martha Stacy Bennington.
