The Life and Legacy of Sydney Patrice Shelton-Hood
SYDNEY PATRICE SHELTON-HOOD passed away unexpectedly at home on April 11, 2017. She was born to Patricia Hopson-Shelton and Paul Edwin Shelton, on June 15, 1971 in New Hartford, NY. SYDNEY spent her youth in Park Forest South and DeKalb, IL before moving to Lancaster, PA where she was a graduate of McCaskey High School. In high school, SYDNEY was an accomplished student academically and athletically winning the prestigious honor of Miss Elk representing the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. She was elected as an Alpha Kappa Alpha Debutante. Upon graduating, she attended Monmouth College where she was a standout soccer player. SYDNEY lived in Indianapolis for the last 26 years, where she was passionately involved in voter rights, community service and volunteering at Eskenazi Hospital working with babies born of addiction. She also supported the lupus community through peer support and The Walk to End Lupus Now. SYDNEY was extremely loving and devoted to her husband Lance M. Hood, her family and friends and the many children who thought of her as a second mother. SYDNEY courageously fought lupus for many years and dealt with many health crises, but her selfless spirit and smile always shined through and brought comfort to anyone blessed enough to know her. Preceding SYDNEY in death are her maternal grandparents Richard “Tex” and Mildred Gorham and Benjamin F. Hopson, and her paternal grandparents Martha and John Shelton. Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband Lance M. Hood; sons; Andrian, Sage, and Giavanni; daughter Kailoni; grandchildren Savion and Mila; parents, Ms. Patricia A. Hopson-Shelton and Mr. Paul E. Shelton; brother Paul E. Shelton, II; stepmother Lillie Shelton; stepbrother Sean Shelton; stepsister Mikaela Shelton; a special sister, Dorjia Dorcius, who became a part of her maternal family; many aunts, uncles, cousins; and a host of friends.
A celebration of Sydney's life will be held at 2pm on Monday, April 17th 2017 at Crown Hill funeral home, 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, IN 46208.
