Phyllis was born to Hugh J. and Ilo G. (Clayton) Henderson in Lafayette, Indiana, on October 21, 1926. She graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School, where she enjoyed playing clarinet in the orchestra. She was a wonderful homemaker, avid gardener and expert seamstress. She loved arts and crafts of all forms and always had a project going. Later in life, Phyllis began creating hand-stitched quilts that gave her a great sense of joy along with a few Fair ribbons as well.

Most notably, was the Phi Beta Psi philanthropic sorority, whose mission is that of raising money for cancer research. Phyllis was passionate about this organization and was a 50-year member (including 14 years in Martinsville, IN).
