Obituary: Mrs. Elizabeth Allene Horst

Mrs. Elizabeth Allene Horst

January 05, 1914 - June 08, 2009

Elizabeth A. “Betty” Horst, 95, a long-time Indianapolis resident, passed away peacefully in her own home June 8, 2009. Born January 5, 1914, in Bloomington, IN, to William S. and Alice Tracy Akin, she married George W. Horst, also of Indianapolis, in 1937. Both were avid golfers and charter members of Woodland Country Club. Betty had three holes-in-one after the age of 60, her last one at age 80, and she was the Indianapolis Women’s Hole-In-One Champion as well. She was an active member of Sahm Park’s 18-hole women’s golf group, and most recently its 9-hole group. Last year she often scored in the 50s for nine-holes.
Betty attended Butler University, class of 1934. She was a member of Delta Gamma national sorority, Alpha Mu Latreian service club, and the Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist. She helped her husband build his insurance business, but always found time to volunteer throughout her life—as a Girl Scout and Camp Fire Girls leader, tournament chairperson for various golf events, Sunday school secretary and volunteer at the Christian Science Reading Room in Broad Ripple, and as a guest reader at Christian Science services held at Midland House living center.
An avid Butler basketball fan, she never missed a game on radio, TV or in person. She also loved to follow the Indiana Pacers and Indianapolis Colts with equal enthusiasm.
She was preceded in death by her husband George, who died in 2000. She is survived by daughter Judy Horst, Menlo Park, CA; daughter Cathy Furimsky and her husband Mike Furimsky, Carmel, IN; granddaughter Sarah Baird and her husband Jeremy Baird, also of Carmel; nieces Claudia Mayhew Evans and Jody Horst; and nephews Steve Mayhew, William Akin, David Akin, and Chris Horst.
Her family would like to gratefully acknowledge the care and support given Betty by Ann, Claudia, Donna, Lee and Sharon.
Per her request, a celebration of her life will be held at a later date for family members. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist, or to Butler University.
