Mr. John W. Hardin Jr.
June 20, 1951 - June 20, 2017
In Loving Memory of John W. Hardin Jr.
John W. Hardin Jr. passed away on June 20, 2017. A visitation will be held on June 27, 2017 from 2:00pm - 4:00pm at Crown Hill Funeral Home (700 W. 38th St, Indianapolis, IN 46208).
John Willie Hardin Jr passed away peacefully after his battle with cancer on his 66th birthday, June 20th, 2017 surrounded by family and four of his closest friends.
Born in Chester, South Carolina to John and Mildred Hardin, he lived the rest of his life in Indianapolis.
John was a strong and fiercely independent man who was born with a truly kind and generous heart. He was the embodiment of a Gemini with one side that would stand defensively against challenges to defend the weak, but beneath his sizeable stature, lay a man who was filled with love and empathy, who only wanted your love and respect in return.
Community and sports were his passions, but seeing your humanity and accepting you just are you are were his gifts. He was a true connector who despite the racial divide that plagued his generation, saw no color lines in the individual, and was embraced and loved by all walks of life.
After graduating from Broad Ripple High school in 1969, he attended Vincennes University and graduated from Porter College in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was then employed by Bank One for over 20 years.
He excelled in his youth in basketball, softball, and volleyball, and his favorite pass time was to join his friends weekly to play cards and fellowship.
John was a proud father to daughter Jil Hardin, of New York and Los Angeles, and shared twenty years of marriage with Joy Hardin of Indianapolis.
He is survived by countless friends, two nephews, his sister in law Vicki Hardin, and his two younger brothers, Charles and Donnie Hardin, both of Indianapolis, who discovered the true meaning of brotherhood through the deepening of their friendship, companionship and support for each other in the last years of his life.
The family would also like to give a special thank you to all of the Eskenazi doctors and nurses, the Premiere Hospice team, and those friends who called him daily and made the extra effort to nurture and lovingly care for him.
Although there were many sports awards and material accomplishments John achieved over his life time, his greatest impact and legacy continues through the hearts of the endless amount of friends and souls he touched all through the state.
The family will receive friends for a viewing on Tuesday, June 27th, at Crown Hill Funeral Home from 2pm -4pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Premiere Hospice, located at 11550 N. Meridian St., Ste #375, Carmel, IN 46032.
