Harry W. Claffey, Jr.,97. Indianapolis died Saturday May 24, 2008. . Harry was born in Indianapolis April 7, 1911 the son of Harry W. and Minnie (Schmidt) Claffey. He was a graduate of Broad Ripple High School and Butler University. He retired from General Electric Sales and Marketing after 40 years of service in 1976. He was a lamp and lighting specialist. As a wholesale salesman he traveled the entire state of Indiana. During WWII because of gas rationing he was forced to be away from home each week. His sales ranged from hospitals to factories. He was a member of Pleasant View Lutheran Church since 1948, during that time he served as president of the Church Council on two occaisions, he was chairman of the Building Committee three times. After retirement he was a member of ELCARM (Evangelical Lutheran Church Association of Retired Men) for twenty years. He was also a member of Centre Lodge #23 F. & A. M., Scottish Rite, Executive Service Corp, and Illuminating Engineering Society. He organized Troop #460 of the Boy Scouts of America in 1956. He led his troop on many camping, canoe and hiking trips. He was awarded the Silver Beaver in 1982, recognizing his 25 years of service to Scouting. Harry loved to travel with his family and his favorite destination was Jackson Hole Wyoming and the Teton Mountains. After retirement he continued his love of travel with his wife. In addition to family travel Harry always looked forward to his annual fishing trip to Canada with business friends. He always returned refreshed and renewed. His wife of fifty years Peggy MacLucas Claffey and his parents preceded him in death. Survivors include his children Roger Claffey, (Cookie) and Don (Diane) Claffey, three grandchildren Dain (Jenny) Claffey, Kirsty (Chad) Peters and Candice Claffey and his former daughter in law Freda Wyatt. Funeral services will be May 28, 2008 at 1:00 pm in Pleasant View Lutheran Church 801 W. 73rd Street, where friends may call from 11:00am until service time. Interment will be in Crown Hill Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Crown Hill Funeral Home. It was Harry’s request that memorial contributions be made to Pleasant View Lutheran Church.
