Alice J. Oliver passed away on June 13, 2017. A visitation will be held on Friday, June 23, 2017 from 10:00 a.m., at Crown Hill Funeral Home (700 W. 38th St, Indianapolis, IN 46208), with services at 12:00 p.m. Burial to immediately follow at Crown Hill Cemetery.
Ms. Alice Jean Oliver was born to Cornell Gilbert and Virginia Keys on June 2, 1936 in Louisville, Kentucky. She was an only child. In the mid 1940's Alice moved to Indianapolis, Indiana were she resided until her death.
Alice attend Indianapolis Public Schools and graduated from George Washington High School. She later obtained a business degree from Indiana Business College. Alice worked for the City of Indianapolis under former Mayor Richard Lugar and Mayor William Hundut. Alice was employed at the Boner Center for seven years as a counselor. She assisted clients with seeking employment and teaching Dress for Success and Etiquette classes. After leaving the Boner Center she started a new career at the Martin Luther King Center as the Senior Program Coordinator where she had a passion to support other seniors. Alice also assisted with creating the Second Time Around Program. The Second Time Around Program focused on grandparents raising grandchildren. Alice also enjoyed modeling with the Senior Sophisticated Group through the Martin Luther King Center. She also worked for the School Board and City County Building for many years. Alice inspired and encouraged many through her spiritual ministry “Fruit of The Spirit”.
Alice confessed hope in Christ at an early age and was baptized. She was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church later moved to Little Flock Primitive Baptist Church and ended with Light of the World Christian Church. Alice was always active in the Church. She served as an usher for 25 years at Light of the World Church. She also served as a Lay Director with the Great Banquet, an interdenominational evangelical outreach.
Alice was also one of the founding organizers of Dialogue Today. Dialogue Today was an organization for Africian-American women and Jewish women coming together for understanding cultural differences. Alice was a very busy lady she served on the Advisory Board for Second Helping, Light House Mission and was the chair-person for Kairos Prison Ministry.
Alice enjoyed her special friends from Light of the World Church and in the Indianapolis Community. She enjoyed traveling, shopping, attending Church conferences and talking on the telephone to her friends.
Alice Jean Oliver left her earthy house on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at the age of eighty-one years old. Alice is preceded in death by her parents and two sons Phillip Jones Jr. and Cornelius Oliver. She leaves to cherish her memory grandson, Dayon R. Jones; granddaughter Shawnta Beverly (Quentin) great grandchildren, Jonathan, Quentin, Jasmine and Alexis; and a host of other relatives and friends.
