July 6, 1926 – May 6, 2017


James Clinton Norwood was born July 6, 1926 in Tarrant County, Texas.  He was the only child of Claude Norwood and Viola Holloway Norwood. 

He was raised in Anadarko, Oklahoma by his grandfather, Cornelius Norwood and his beloved grandmother, Virginia Norwood.  He professed Christ at an early age and was a member of Greater First Baptist Church.  He attended Anadarko Public Schools and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1946.  Afterwards he enlisted in the United States Army where he served from 1946 to 1949 and 1951 to 1955.

In 1957, he relocated to Joliet, Illinois and worked as a truck driver for Steinburg-Baum Warehouse.  He met Dorothy Jean Norwood in Hammond, Indiana in 1960 and they were married in 1963.  In 1964, he began working for Vulcan Mold and Iron Company in Lansing, Illinois as a Cupola Tender.  He was elected President of the Union, Local 4692 for the company.  A position he held for 23 Years until the company closed in 1985.

Jim was always busy serving his church and community. He joined Bethel AME Church in 1960.  During his time there, he served as Senior Choir President, Steward Board, Trustee Board, Sunday School Superintendent and bus driver.  He was well known in the community and he never met a stranger.  He was an assistant coach for the Hammond High Freshman Football, a softball umpire and he was always encouraging the youth in the community and helping young men find employment.  

In 1998 James and Dorothy moved to Indianapolis, Indiana to be near their children and grandchildren.  They joined Robinson Community AME Church where he became a member of the church Trustee Board and the Men of Robinson. Jim loved to sing!  He sang with The Indiana Lay Male Chorus and he would sing a solo in church service when requested.  He joined New Zion Community Church in 2013 and continued to be an active member with The Knights of New Zion until his health would no longer allow him to attend.

Jim passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 12:06 AM.  He was preceded in death by his son, James Clinton Norwood, Jr.

He leaves to cherish him always, his dedicated and loving wife of 54 years, Dorothy Jean Parrish Norwood; one son, Darrin Jay Norwood (Tammy) of Indianapolis; Indiana, daughters, Wesselynne Robinson of San Antonio, Texas, Constance (Ronnie) Ladd of Edmond, Oklahoma and April (Floyd) Barnes of Indianapolis, Indiana; nine grandsons; nine granddaughters; a host of great-grandchildren; two childhood cousins, Georgia Canady of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Wennell Tillis one sister in law, Clote Morrow of Mesa, Arizona; one brother in law, Rev. Maurice Parrish of Hammond, Indiana; many nieces and nephews; three devoted friends, Minister Orval Brown, Mr. Floyd Taylor and Mr. Joe Humphrey and many more who have been touched by his encouragement and love. 


The family wishes to thank RN, Ellen Veers, CNA, Becky Eldridge, Chaplain, Minister Vey Kidney and the entire staff of Heartland Hospice; PCP, Dr. Thomas Marshall, and the staff of Indiana University Medical Group, Eagle Highlands, the Alzheimer’s Specialists at IU Avon and his loving neighbor Mr. Ken MaGee for their support during this journey. 

Funeral Information

Services will be held at New Zion, 955 Oliver Avenue on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 12pm with a visitation beginning at 10am.
