In Loving Memory of James Russell Hardin
James Russell Hardin, 97, passed away September 23, 2017. Jim was a lifelong resident of Indianapolis, born November 24, 1919, to Raymond and Ruth Hardin. He graduated from Washington High School where he was a member of the 1936 City-County Championship basketball team. Following high school, Jim attended Butler University and was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity.
After graduation from Butler, Jim returned to the family farm to operate it with his father until his father’s passing. Jim continued farming while also foundingJim Hardin Agency, the predecessor to Jim Hardin and Sons Insurance Agency, a legacy which continues to this day. Eventually Jim sold the farm and worked exclusively in the insurance business.
Jim was an avid golfer who had his only hole in one in his late eighties! In addition, he loved bridge and played regularly until the last couple of years. Jim had the greenest thumb around and could get almost any plant to flourish under his care and often would share plants with family members. Jim was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. He was also a 32nd degree Mason and Shriner for over 50 years.
Jim was preceded in death by Elizabeth (Liz), his wife of 64 years. Survivors include his sons Tim (Barbara) and Tom (Nancy), four grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. “Father” will be missed by all.
Calling will be Thursday evening 6 pm-8 pm at Crown Hill Funeral Home, 700 W. 38th Street in Indianapolis. The family will gather for a private service and burial on Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to Bridgeport Lodge #162, 8597 W. Morris Street, Indianapolis, IN, 46231, in memory of Jim Hardin.
The family wants to thank the wonderful staff at Clearwater Commons for their ongoing care and constant compassion for Jim, as well as Premier Hospice for the services they provided during Jim’s last months.
Calling will be from 6 until 8 on Thursday, September 28, 2017. Burial will follow on Friday morning.
