In Loving Memory of Dennis Gene Hunley

Dennis Hunley, 74, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away peacefully January 1,  2017 at home. Dennis was born in Indianapolis, Indiana to Stewart and Pauline Hunley. He graduated from Beech Grove High School in 1960 and attended Ball State University prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army in March 1964. Dennis served in the Vietnam War before being Honorably Discharged in March of 1966. He entered the Quality Control career field in 1967 working for ACCO Wilson Instrument Company where he advanced to the position of District Manager-Midwest. Dennis met his wife, Janet K. (Mong) Hunley, and they were married in August 1969. In 1976, Dennis launched his own company, Quality Assurance Corporation, where he represented Quality Control Testing equipment manufacturers, provided Nondestructive Testing training and certifications, and consulted on failure analysis and all areas of Quality for more than 30 years. Dennis’ major passion was all things racing. He lived out some of that passion as a United States Auto Club (USAC) Official from 1967-1996, with the Indy Racing League (IRL) from 1996-2006 in charge of Accident Investigations, Failure Analysis, Safety Inspection, Wheel Certifications, and Nondestructive Testing, serving on the Technical Committee at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway from 1967-2006, and being able to attend this year’s 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, which was his 65th consecutive race! Among his many memberships and recognitions were two of his favorites - the Indianapolis 500 Old-Timers Club (Lifetime Member) and as a Kentucky Colonel. Dennis is survived by his wife, Janet; sister, Priscilla (Cole) Hoffman; children, Scott Hunley, Tony (Beth) Hunley, and Jennifer (Greg) Stafford; grandchildren, Dustin (Ruth) Hunley, Keegan Pierson, Devin (Kensie Turner) Hunley, Ashlynn Hunley, Xander Pierson, Liam Pierson, Duncan Hunley, Becca Hunley, Claire Stafford, and Norah Hunley; great-grandchild Wyatt Hunley; and many cousins, race family, and friends. 

 

Funeral Information

The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, January 4 from 4-7PM at the Memorial
Chapel - Crown Hill Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at Thursday, January 5 at
10AM. Burial will take place at Crown Hill Cemetery.
