Kathie was born on March 31, 1943, in Minneapolis MN, the daughter of Stewart D. and Marie F. Gile. She was a 1961 graduate of the Academy of the Holy Angels High School in Minneapolis, an experience she recounted in her memoire, “A Box of Bananas”. Kathie earned a Bachelor of Slavic Languages from the University of Minnesota and earned a Masters from Penn State University in 1967. She later completed graduate study in Exercise Science at Ball State University.
Kathie taught Russian and German at Ball State. She also co-authored a workbook and taught Latin and Greek Derivatives. Not confined to the study of languages, Kathie dabbled in the sciences, working on several classic problems including the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow. Her interests in Exercise Science led her to become the Program Director at the Muncie YMCA where she taught aerobics and other fitness courses; she also taught in the Physical Education Department at Ball State.
Kathie met her husband, Alan Samuelson, at Penn State University. They married in Minneapolis, Minnesota on March 23rd, 1968 and have been married for over 49 years. They have 3 children and 4 grandchildren. All are unique, yet they share a love of Prince, Monty Python, Russian heritage, dance parties, and travel.
Kathie was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Carmel, IN where she sang – always beautifully – in the choir. She was active in the Muncie and Indianapolis belly dance communities and performed frequently, especially known for her joyous dancing and fiery red hair. Kathie also read widely, enjoyed Russian literature and culture, Slavic dance, running, animals, collecting grail-shaped objects, and bats (stuffed). She travelled widely throughout Asia and Eastern Europe.
