Barbara Ellen Gorman was born on June 10th, 1936 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Harold and Minnie Alice Artis.
On July 28, 1952 she was united in Holy Matrimony to Charles Albert Gorman. To their union four children were born, Juanita, Juan, Patricia and Pamela. They were separated only by his death on January 5, 2009.
Barbara was baptized by O’Dell Mayberry at an early age and was a devoted member of the James Street Church of the Living God, and she later in life joined Freedom Tabernacle Church.
Barbara held several jobs prior to her employment at Community East Hospital in 1965. Barbara was employed less than a few months in Food Services before receiving a promotion to Supervisor in Salads. During her 27 year tenure at Community, she was well known for her Candlelight Salad which many enjoyed and was a all time favorite request. Barbara retired from Community Hospital East in 1992, at the age of 57 years old. She soon became a caregiver and travel companion with Charles. They loved to travel and have fun. Barbara was an avid basketball and football fan, her favorite teams were The Indiana Pacers, The Indianapolis Colts and IU Basketball Team.
Barbara was also a business partner alongside her husband Charles, as they once operated the family business, The Artist Greenhouse after the death of her father, Harold. Barbara's love of gardening started at an early age as her parents grew and sold their own food while Harold operated his landscaping business.
Barbara attended Indianapolis Public School #37 and Crispus Attucks High School, the only high school in Indianapolis, at this time.
Barbara was known by many titles, at work, her staff called her Ms. Gorman, or Barbaralou, she was also known as Color Pair for her love of playing cards. She loved people and people loved her. She always had a house full of people as she loved to prepare her special recipes and entertain. Barbara had two loving dog companions, Candy (Toy poodle) and Geegee (Shitzu) who both brought joy to her life.
Barbara departed this life on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 4:05 AM at the age of eighty years old and ten months. She was preceded in death by her mother, Minnie Alice, her father, Harold, her husband, Charles, son, Juan and sister Edna Cowherd.
Barbara leaves to cherish her precious memories to her daughters; Juanita L. Barnes, Patricia A. Gorman and Pamela E. Kinslow. Grandchildren; Gale Jr., DaJuan Sr., Anita, Joshua and Jarryd. Great-grandchildren; DaJuan Jr., Dameyen, Annora, Maliah and Anya. Sisters; Loretta (Joe) Webster, Carolyn (Teenie) Malone, Aurelia (Toodie) Grimes, a host of nieces and nephews, and a very large extended family, The Grundy family, the Artis family, in-laws and friends.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 2:00 p.m., at Crown Hill Funeral Home (700 West 38th Street, Indianapolis, IN), with visitation from 12:00 pm. Burial to immediately follow at Crown Hill Cemetery.
