CROWN HILL CEMETERY'S SIXTH PHOTO CONTEST
November 11, 2001
About the Contest
The deadline for entries into Crown Hill Cemetery's Sixth Photo Contest was on Friday, October 12, 2001 and the opening reception and awards ceremony for was held a month later on Sunday, November 11 in the Administrative Office/Funeral Home. Seven hundred dollars were presented to the winning photographers and award ribbons were placed on their winning photographs. For the first time, our contest was held in conjunction with the community-wide "Spirit and Place" Festival of the arts, humanities, and religion. Crown Hill joined with numerous museums, congregations, universities, and culture centers to celebrate the spirit of Indianapolis through the theme of "Crossing Boundaries." While many photographers adapted this theme into their photographs, it was not a requirement for entry.
Photo Display
The photos will remain on display in the Administrative Office/Funeral Home until February 1, 2001 and can be see during regular office hours. (Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Administrative Office is closed on Sunday.) For directions to the office, please call 317-925-8231.
2001 Photo Contest Judging
The judging for our sixth photo contest lasted over three hours and was conducted by professional photographers Stan Gurka and Jim Chagares. Sixty-six photographers captured over 200 images of Crown Hill in all seasons and weather. The amount of skill and creativity represented in these images was impressive -- so much so that it was a challenge for our judges to narrow down their choices to eight photos in each of our two categories. Sixty-two percent (129) of our entries were Color images and thirty-eight percent (79) were Black and White. All sepia and monotone images are judged in the Black and White category. In our judging process, the names of the photographers are carefully kept confidential until all awards are given, to ensure fairness.
Contest Sponsor
The Crown Hill Heritage Foundation sponsored Crown Hill Cemetery's Sixth Photo
Contest, providing the judge's fees, $700 in cash awards, award ribbons, and the contest
reception/show. Established in 1985, the Crown Hill Heritage Foundation serves to educate and inform
the public by providing historical tours, special events, and educational programs to increase public
awareness and promote the rich heritage found within Crown Hill Cemetery. Further, it serves to
preserve and restore historically significant buildings and landmarks within Crown Hill Cemetery, many
which date back to the late 1800s. As a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit public charity, the Crown Hill
Heritage Foundation works to raise funds to fulfill this mission, and in doing so it plays a vital role in
ensuring that the rich heritage of Crown Hill will be preserved for generations to come. If you would like more information on how to support the foundation, please contact Marianne Randjelovic at 317-920-4165.
Future Contests
Our first contest was held in 1989 and with one exception we've held them approximately every two years. When will the next contest be? No plans have been made yet, but we always encourage photographers to visit the cemetery and take images through all the seasons and at our varied events for entry at a later date. Any announcement of a future contest will be posted on this Web site.
