About 100 brave and hearty souls came out on February 23 to complete the 11th annual Race Through Hoosier History. With a fresh snowfall of 7 inches or so of heavy, wet snow (on top of ice!), the Crown Hill race staff was challenged to find the race course, much less make it ready for race participants.

We applaud the great efforts of Crown Hill Superintendent, Mike Dooley, who plowed the parking lot and a modified 3-mile course (no hill!) on race morning! This enabled us to have a joint run and walk start at 9:15 a.m. under the enthusiastic direction of Race Director, Jeff Coates. To reduce the risk of injury, we made the race a "non-competitive event," and encouraged participants to just have fun on the course and enjoy the beauty of the snow.

With overcast skies, a temperature of 21 degrees, and 13 m.p.h. winds, event participants headed out into the chilly white wonderland with great enthusiasm for a truly memorable winter experience. Thanks to the hard work of Indy Runners and Tuxedo Brothers volunteers (who set-up a finish line and clock!), we were able to have a safe and fun running and walking event.

Following the race, participants enjoyed bottled water from Costco Wholesale, fruit from MCL Cafeterias and donuts from Krispy Kreme. Everyone then enjoyed a Crown Hill History Trivia Contest with lots of give-aways, which was followed by a drawing for the overall and age division gift certificate awards donated by The Running Company, one of our many great sponsors. (The awards were raffled because there was no competition.)

Race packets included fun t-shirts*, a bag of Hurst Beans (with seasoning!) for a pot of 15-bean soup, chap stick from Forethought Insurance, and discount coupons from MCL Cafeterias.

*(If you did not pick-up your t-shirt at packet pick-up on Friday, February 21 or on race morning, we regret that they are no longer available.)

It was certainly a "race for the books" that provided lots of fun memories for all who participated. We wish to thank all our sponsors and volunteers who made this race possible. Many thanks too, for our race participants who joined us on race morning, making all our efforts worthwhile.

IT'S A DUESY!
Come experience the fun of the 2003 Race Through Hoosier History! In addition to costumed characters along the routes, this year you will enjoy the sight of a beautiful Duesenberg J automobile cruising the grounds, owned and driven by Dr. John C. Klein of Indianapolis (weather permitting). The Duesenberg brothers, Frederick and August "Auggie," built these luxury cars in the 1930s in Indianapolis. Frederick is buried on Section 104 and August is entombed in the Mausoleum.

Dr. Klein's car, the Duesenberg J, was built in 1931. It is a Rollston convertible victoria chassis #2460 and engine J472. The car was purchased new by Ralph Pulitzer Sr. (son of Joseph), and also a New York City newspaper owner. Pratt & Whitney in New Haven, Conn. used the engine during WW II to power superchargers for airplane engines. The car is as original except the fenders are brown. We wish to thank Dr. Klein for his generous support of the race in sharing his car with us.

ABOUT THE 2003 RACE - NEW RACE DATE AND COURSES!
The 11th Annual Race Through Hoosier History will be held on a NEW DATE - Sunday, February 23, 2003, and will include new courses for both the run and walk. Crown Hill Heritage Foundation and the volunteers of Indy Runners, the race is a 5-mile run and 3-mile walk through Crown Hill Cemetery. Proceeds benefit the restoration of Crown Hill Cemetery's historic buildings and landmarks. Both courses are very scenic and the running course includes "The HILL," which is the highest hill (842 ft.) in Marion County and the resting place of the famous Hoosier Poet, James Whitcomb Riley. Costumed characters will greet you along the way - and weather permitting, you will also see a mint condition 1931 Duesenberg Model J cruising along the course. Water stops and post-race refreshments will be provided. NOTE: For competitive walkers - the course will be monitored by judges to ensure that basic racewalking rules are followed. The judge's decisions will be final. If you're not competitive - that's OK - come and have FUN!
