Phyllis Jean Gant was born on January 27, 1954 in Gary, Indiana to the late Ernest and Margaree Ward. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1972 where she was a talented majorette. She made her family proud when she attended Indiana University to study education.
In 1973, while eating at the IU cafeteria, Phyllis was approached by the man who would become the love of her life, Juan C. Gant. They married in 1979 and later had two daughters, Phyllisia and Phylindia . While working and parenting full time, Phyllis earned a masters degree in education from Butler University.
Phyllis worked for the Indianapolis Public Schools for over thirty years as a teacher and later as a school counselor. She was an impactful educator who loved her students. She spent many evenings and weekends planning meaningful programs and activities for her students.
In addition to spending time with family and close friends, Phyllis enjoyed reading romance novels and listening to music. She was a member of New Life Worship Center and loved attending women's ministries events.
She will be remembered as the most generous, thoughtful and understanding person we were privileged to meet.
She is celebrated by her husband, Juan, daughters, Phylindia and Phyllisia; siblings, Tom, Earline Sumrall, Jeffrey, James, and Jerome Ward; and grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends.
Phyllis and I worked together at School 60. She was the most positive, caring person I ever worked with. Prayers for all of you.
